Drilon’s Way to Rise

The repressive conduct of the administration in treating the opposition has a long way to go. Just look at what happened to the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidates vying for important posts in the city and province of Iloilo.

They have been slapped with what seemed already forgotten cases but were retrieved by the administration to destroy them morally and pave the way for an easy victory of the Liberal Party candidates.

Just look at the provincial battle for governor. The president visited Iloilo twice to proclaim and twice endorsed Gov. Arthur Defensor. But why call for another shot already done by DILG Sec. Mar Roxas and Sen. Franklin M. Drilon? For what good and for whose benefit?

The two have already organized a provincial party headed by the three political warlords in the persons of Gov. Defensor of the Third District, former Gov. Niel Tupas Sr. of the Fifth District and Cong. Oscar Garin of the First District of Iloilo.

If we look back at the history of politics in the province, these tree warlords are arch rivals for decades in the race for supremacy to govern the Iloilo Provincial Capitol building. Surprisingly, the three who are worse of enemies has suddenly become allies.

Now there are six political giants against one. Pres. Pinoy, Sen. Drilon, DILG Sec. Roxas, Defensor, Garin and Tupas against Biron. Other than combining of forces, Sen. Drilon is also keen on destroying all the opposition in the local arena.

Why? The senator is clearing the local areas in preparation for 2016 not for Sec. Roxas but for himself. Political animals can easily glean that Sec. Roxas is a weak candidate for president. The Liberal Party is certain about it and they must look for a stronger and winnable one.

This they see in Sen. Drilon. The very reason why the senator wants all nuisance be cleared before 2016 and this election is crucial to his ambition. Look at what happened to the tax cases of mayorable candidate Rommel Ynion of UNA.

Whether the senator admits it or not, he has already created an impression of a wicked general for his men to win the war at all cost. In fact, the police in Camp Crame are ahead in asking for certified copies of the warrant of arrest for Ynion than his lawyer’s request for Court information.

Worse, for a case with only P20,000 bail, a police superintendent and six of his men flew from Manila to Iloilo to serve the warrant of arrest. See? He doesn’t worry too much about the battle for governor knowing the tilt of the balance is in their favor – six against one.

But Iloilo City is a crucial arena for Sen. Drilon that his congressman and mayor must win. No wonder why he is doing all political tricks for his candidates to win this election because he badly needs them for 2016 presidential elections.

In the race for Congress at the Second District of Iloilo between Mayor Arcadio Gorriceta of Pavia, Cong. Salvador “Kiting” Cabaluna III and the incumbent Cong. Augusto “Boboy” Syjuco, the latter is already badly beaten by his looks because of Sen. Drilon wrongdoings. This is what Cong. Syjuco repeatedly claim.

Like Gov. Defensor, the Ilonggo senator badly wants the victory of Gorriceta in the Second District and Niel Tupas Sr. in the Third District to complete the list of his generals in the province of Iloilo. He wants to make sure of his advantage by 2016.

For a dream come true, they are Cong. Richard Garin of the First District, Cong. Gorriceta in the Second District, reelectionist Cong. Defensor, Jr. in the Third District, Niel Tupas, Sr. in the Fourth and reelectionist Niel Tupas, Jr. in the Fifth District.

Now, should one still wonder why Sen. Drilon is bent on destroying his enemies in the local arena? Not only that, his style of prosecution of the UNA candidates seems a massacre that when the smoke cleared all must be dead.  But God knows, exitus acta probat - the outcome of this election justifies the deed!
